Eidos Montreal, the creative force behind iconic games like Tomb Raider and Deus Ex, revealed today that it will have to let go of some of its team members.
The studio is set to reduce its workforce by 75 employees, though the specific individuals affected by this decision haven’t been disclosed yet. The primary reason for the layoffs is the studio’s inability to fit these team members into other existing projects. The company was quick to underscore that this move has nothing to do with the capabilities or commitment of those being let go. They’re committed to assisting affected employees as they transition into new opportunities in the job market.
The official announcement expressed: “Today, we had to deliver the difficult news to our team that up to 75 valued team members will be departing, linked to the conclusion of one of our mandates. This isn’t about their value or skills; it’s simply an unfortunate truth that we can’t integrate them into our other ongoing projects.”
“Those leaving are exceptionally skilled professionals, and we’re dedicated to supporting them through this transition. Eidos-Montreal remains focused on our current development projects.”
This decision comes a little over a year after a similar layoff event, when the studio cut 97 positions due to global economic challenges. Around that time, it surfaced that their parent company, Embracer Group, had shelved plans for a new entry in the Deus Ex series.
Eidos Montreal, highly regarded for its work on franchises like Deus Ex and Tomb Raider, also developed the 2014 iteration of Thief and last year’s Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy. In June, the studio announced it would be providing support to PlayGround Games on the upcoming Xbox release, Fable.
