Man, where do I even start? Okay, so Thursday, yeah? Sucker Punch Productions tossed out this crazy deep dive, showing off their new PlayStation 5 jam—Ghost of Yōtei. This thing sounds like a ride! So, apparently, we’re getting to know more about Atsu’s journey across Ezo and her arsenal. Seriously, who wouldn’t want to lose themselves in another one of these epic open-world games?
Oh, and they’re bringing back that Kurosawa Mode from Ghost of Tsushima! It was such a fantastic nod to Akira Kurosawa, the mastermind behind epic samurai flicks like Seven Samurai. The guy was a legend. I mean, they’ve got the black and white vibes, with film grain and Japanese dialogue—sync included!
But here’s a twist—Takashi Miike Mode is in the mix now. More blood, more mud. Yikes! I reckon Miike’s fans from his 2013 film 13 Assassins will get it. You’ll get a camera shoved right up in the action. Though, there’s another vibe to explore—they teamed up with Shinichirō Watanabe! That’s the Samurai Champloo dude. Now you can get some lo-fi beats while you wander and, uh, murder. Chilled murder tunes? Is that a thing?
They showed these new tools of destruction—Atsu can wield dual katanas, an ōdachi, and a kusarigama. Switching them during fights and even yanking them from an opponent’s grip! Wild. And of course, exploration is huge. Follow wildlife, get lost, or maybe find something cool—like, who knows what you’ll trip over next?
By the end, they sprinkled in these Limited Edition consoles. Console plates with Mount Yōtei? Controllers featuring Atsu herself? A nerd’s dream, right there!
And just a heads up, this isn’t a direct sequel to Ghost of Tsushima. They’ve plopped us 300 years later in a different slice of Japan. We’re in Ezo, or Hokkaido as it’s known now. Atsu’s seeking payback against the Yōtei Six—the ones who wrecked her family. And as you rack up hits from bounties or hunting down the Six, you’ll morph into this legendary Ghost character. What’s neat is the narrative freedom—you take down these Yōtei Six folks in whatever order you fancy. So, uh, yeah, make it your story.
This game seems ready to mess with our emotions, in the best way possible. Can’t wait to dive in, whenever it drops!
