Oh boy, where do I even start with this? So, there I was, just casually tuned into the PlayStation State of Play, right? And bam! Out of nowhere, PlayStation Studios, Marvel Games, and Arc System Works are like, “Hey folks, guess what? We’re teaming up!” Yeah, they’re bringing us this new Marvel tag team fighter named Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls. Or MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls, if you wanna get all fancy with the letters. Anyway, it’s apparently dropping in 2026, so mark your calendars if you’re into that kind of thing.
So, what’s this game about? Well, it seems like they’ve roped in a bunch of big-name characters. You know, the usual suspects like Captain America, Iron Man, Spider-Man, and that bunch. And hey, Doctor Doom and Ghost Rider too. They’re not just throwing in heroes – villains are getting some love here too. I mean, will they be as awesome as in the comics? That’s something we’ll have to wait to see.
Now, this Kazuto Sekine, who’s like the Game Director and Lead Battle Designer — wow, what a title — gets on the mic. He’s all excited, explaining how they wanted Marvel Tokon to be this game everyone can enjoy. Which is cool, right? Normally, you’d have to juggle between characters in these games. But here, apparently, you just need to nail one character down. Then you press a few buttons, and bam! You’ve got multiple characters popping in, lending a hand, or maybe throwing some punches. It kind of makes me think of some crazy kitchen experiment that somehow works out.
And the whole 4v4 thing? Yeah, that’s one part that made me go, “Whoa, really?” Most of these tag fighters stick to 2v2 or 3v3, but they’re really pushing the envelope here. Sekine mentions that this setup lets them craft these wild moments and maybe even amp up the tag fighting genre a notch. But is it going to work, or will it just be chaos on screen? Guess we’ll find out when it actually drops.
Oh, and before I forget, Sony also tossed out another surprise with this thing called Project Defiant. A fight stick, but wireless, using some PlayStation Link tech magic. Low latency, they say — like that’s ever been a concern of mine, but hey, options are always nice, right? And, for those purists out there, it even has a good old USB-C connection. Because we all love choices, don’t we?
So there you have it. A mash-up of heroes, villains, and some pretty techy goodies coming our way. It’s got me curious — not entirely sure why, but it does. Maybe it’ll be worth the wait… Maybe.
