During the Grand Finals of the Call of Duty League Championship 2025 — you know, that huge gaming event — there was some juicy stuff dropped by Treyarch’s design director, Lawrence Metten. He compared their latest brainchild, Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 (yep, seven!), to Black Ops 2. And honestly, I don’t get why that connection stuck in my head, but here we are.
So yeah, this new Black Ops 7 is like a direct sequel to the old Black Ops 2. If you’ve been hanging around the gaming circles, you probably know this already — forgive me for stating the obvious. Anyway, it was at that Xbox Games Showcase on June 8th when they let this cat out of the bag. They’ve brought back David Mason as the guy in charge, and it’s set in 2035. Loads of conflicts and crazy psychological warfare are promised. Sounds intense, right?
Oh, side note! Looks like Raul Menendez, the bad guy from Black Ops 2, might be making a bit of a comeback too. Sneaky! And Activision lets us know—it’s big news that you can expect their co-op campaign, multiplayer action, and oh yes, Zombies. Whoop!
Some say the peak of Call of Duty games was when Black Ops 2 came out in 2012. Remember those days? Apparently, Treyarch hasn’t forgotten either. Metten was hinting that they remembered what made Black Ops 2 so darn special. Just a little nostalgia for you.
Anyway — or wait—was I going somewhere with this? Oh right, Metten’s talking again about Black Ops 7 and comparing it with Black Ops 2. He’s like, if you loved Black Ops 2, you’re gonna dig Black Ops 7. Emphasizing those creative freedoms, they’ve got. Always good to hear a team’s got room to breathe, right? Like, we’re not stuck playing the same old thing again.
Fast forward to some news I almost forgot to mention! Black Ops 7 is dropping later this year. Expect it on PC, PlayStation (4 and 5), Xbox (One and Series X|S), and maybe even the Nintendo Switch 2. How cool is that? Microsoft and Nintendo are chatting like long-lost pals to bring Call of Duty back to Nintendo.
Okay, rambling done, I think. You’ll see more about Black Ops 7 soon enough. There’s a whole big reveal planned this summer. When? Who knows… yet! Keep those eyes peeled, fellow gamers.
