Alright, so here’s the story, kind of how I’m seeing it. There’s this game, NBA 2K25 — dropped in 2024, and seriously, it’s massive. I mean, everyone and their grandma has probably heard about it. Anyway, some player went absolutely wild, spent like $32,000 on microtransactions. Yeah, that much. It’s like, “What even?”
Okay, so I dive into this rabbit hole on Twitter, and there’s a guy called Troydan who posts a vid about this whole drama. The player’s mostly splurging on VC packs — those Virtual Currency things? Costs about $160 for 700K and $106.99 for 450K. And somehow, this player just keeps hitting buy, not only once but a bunch of times! It’s like, wow, okay.
And the reactions? Gold. Some folks joked, saying he’s basically footing the bill for 2K’s entire staff. Others, not so much laughing, were like, “Eh, this is why microtransactions suck.” But, love it or hate it, those microtransactions rake in the cash, no doubt.
Something else — back to the game itself — there’s this cool spot called The City. It’s like the central hub where you can jump into various modes and check out murals of basketball legends. It’s pretty epic if you ask me. This $32,000 spending spree kinda overshadows it though.
But — oh, yeah — NBA 2K25’s still getting updates, even though 2K26 isn’t out yet. (Bet 26 is gonna be lit, but I digress.) Latest update was this June thing, gearing up for Season 8. They’ve got new stuff lined up, like card unlocks featuring a bunch of b-ball stars — D’Angelo Russell, Bam Adebayo… and some mascot called The Coyote. I mean, okay, guess that’s cool.
And the whole saga just leaves you thinking. Why’d this player drop that much cash? Flexing? Addiction? Random impulse? Not sure, but it’s definitely a wild ride. Life lessons from the world of virtual b-ball, I guess.
